Sometimes I wonder if President Trump lives on the same planet as me.
Whatever your thoughts are about Trump and climate change, it is clear that our planet has been taking strain for a long time. Almost 2000 years ago, the apostle Paul wrote, “But with eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” (Romans 8:21-22)
The creation has been groaning….? What does that mean? A list of these groans are varied and long;
- Our seas are being overfished.
- Our dependence on fossil fuels causes war, disputes and even ecological disasters.
- Plastic in our oceans, rivers and lakes.
- In many places in the world, the air people breathe is toxic.
- Our polar ice caps are melting, and the sea is rising because the earth is getting hotter!
The answer? It is easy for me to sit here and write about all that is wrong, but are there any answers? A lot of people have all kinds of agenda’s and selective interpreting of facts around all that we place under the umbrella of “climate change”, and so the answers are as complex as the problem.
Whatever the facts, what is clear, things have changed and continue to change when it comes to the “groaning” of creation.
Here’s an idea
I am not presumptuous enough to try and resolve the complexities under all that is called “climate change”. But I would like to advance one idea.
This idea comes from what I believe is core to all human beings. It is connected to destructive forces at work. The idea is, “fear” and “not enough” or “lack”.
Politics and business thrive on these two pretenders. Whether it is selling perfume or keeping our borders safe, fear and lack need to thrive. Let’s face it, what could be worse than foreigners invading our country while we smell bad!
As long as people fear each other, and believe that there is not enough, they will exploit each other and the planet they all share.
Other than taking responsibility for how I manage waste, plastics and the like, what can I do?
I have decided to combat fear and lack with one compelling idea…
- To live generatively.
- There is more than enough for everyone.
Part 2 on “generative solution” will follow soon.
