A little while ago my wife and I were travelling overseas. After checking in our luggage, we went along to immigration. People from all over the world were lining up to get their passports stamped. There was a long line. It was hot and stuffy. It smelt a bit like humanity. Getting our passports stamped meant that we could get into the departure lounge with cool air-conditioning. So, I was a little restless and impatient.
As is my nature, I began to work out how many immigration agents were in their booths. How long the line was. How long it took to stamp a passport. I was now thinking of ways that would make this process more efficient.
Then, I had a strange, very real experience. This type of experience is very rare in my life.
I felt a small quiet voice whispering in my ear. Not an audible voice, but more of a voice in my heart. It felt like the voice of God. And the voice said to me, “Do you want to see me?”
I looked around, a little surprised by this “voice”, and yet, in my heart I said, “yes”! What else could I say?
Then the “voice” said, “Take a look around”. I did this and saw people of all ages, sizes and shapes standing in the line. In my heart and head, I acknowledged to the “voice” and said, “I see all these people”.
Then God said to me, “Every one of these people bear my Image, they are all image bearers of me. They may not be living my image out, or they may not know it, but never the less, they are all Image bearers of Me”.
As I stood and looked around, it became a holy and transformational moment for me. There is not one human on this earth that is, has been or shall ever be, that does not bear the image of God.
This changes everything.
Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us.” So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them Gen 1:26a-27
